Week of October 23rd

download (1)

HAPPY MONDAY!!!!  I am so excited about our upcoming week! I am looking forward to our Fall Festival and I hope that you are too. Monday marks the 54th day of school which means there are only 50 days remaining in the first semester. 54 days down… 127 days to go!

Team, Please do not forget about our feedback celebration in the media center immediately following dismissal on tomorrow.  As I stated before, I cannot get better nor can you if we do not have an open and honest forum to give feedback. Feedback helps to guide our practices more effectively. I hope to be a better leader as a result of the focus group’s findings.

Check out the video of the week…Our UPS mentors sponsored a trip for our students to Georgia Tech and Flip Burger…check out how to make a Liquid Nitrogen milk shake …

There are some exciting things happening at Fickett, please make sure you read the entire blog.

I wish everyone a smooth 12th week of school!

Quote for the week (again)…(This quote is talking to me!)

Kudos to ALL of our Professional Development Facilitators who lead dynamic PDs on last Tuesday! Ms. Garlington, Dr. Blunt, Ms. Scott, Mr. Doby,  Ms. Lewis, Ms. Angela Bryant Curry

Kudos to Ms. Hunter HER  STUDENTS ARE DOING AN AWESOME JOB TRACKING THEIR AR DATA!!  Please ask to see their AR data folders.

Kudos to the fourth-grade team for having the fastest transition time in the history of changing classes. During changing of classes… students were given a countdown at the door before entering…I believe it was 10 seconds…the next things I knew…One class started number talks 15 seconds after the class entered and another class started fact fluency drills with their elbow partner 15 seconds after entering the classroom. Things were prepared and students did not have a chance to misbehave because they were too occupied with the countdown and trying to get in place to start their “learning”!

Kudos to Ms. Ingram…for her awesome planning regarding small group instruction based on data! Her Guided reading instruction is fun and well planned out!

Kudos to Ms. Debose…It is never a dull moment in her classroom…students are always engaged…I love the way students stand at attention to read the objective before all lessons and they are responsible for knowing the meaning of the annotated words and making connections within their tasks.

Kudos to Ms. Thomas…for conducting Science Senses Popcorn Lab and giving her students a lesson on LAB SAFETY !! Her students had a ball!

Kudos to Ms. King for organizing our UPS mentorship outing! Our students had a blast visiting Georgia Tech and ending the day at Flip Burger for lunch!

Kudos to Ms. Royal and Dr. Orpigo for competing in the Special Olympics and BRINGING HOME THE WINNING PRIZE!!!images

Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Data Binders: Students should be creating goals and documenting assessments in their binders. The Team will come around this week to interview your students.  The interview will include completing the student goal sheet for every student. This will not be a quick process; therefore, we will pull students out of enrichment to complete this task. (This task is still underway)

Classroom Walk-Throughs: This will be our focus for this week:

  1.  Evidence and solid implementation of the Week at a Glance.
  2. Data Notebooks (Students should be able to use  their data notebook to speak to their progress in Math and ELA.)
  3. New- Please make sure that SWD students are following their IEP explicitly. Students cannot spend more time in a resource environment in the name of extra help and more support if it is not in their IEP to do so.  This is potentially a lawsuit waiting to happen and compensatory services that the district will have to pay. When in doubt please ask. We are here to help!

Here are just a few of our ongoing PDs…

Using your Data Wisely- This course will demonstrate how to use your data for flexible grouping and how to create independent small groups for students to support them with their deficient areas found in their student data binder.

Annotating Objectives- This course will demonstrate how to annotate objectives and use them throughout the lessons to help students make connections.

Following the units of study and organizing the important information in the Lessons at a Glance.  This course will demonstrate how to identify the particular content to be taught and your goals for learning outcomes.

Accelerated Reader- This course will demonstrate how to pull reports, how to monitor the books your students’ are reading and how to find ways to ensure your students are reading routinely.

Effective Behavior interventions- This course will demonstrate how to put the Right systems, Practices, and Data in place to support Positive Behavior.

Math Strategies that work- This course will demonstrate how to support active student participation in math lessons which allows teachers to assess the developing proficiency levels of all students in the class by walking around to monitor student responses.   These strategies are especially effective during the Mental Math part of an Everyday Mathematics lesson.

Parent Involvement: Please be sure to continue to set up Parent Student Conferences…Please allow your students to lead the conference using their Data Binders.

Spread a positive word – Teachers should make one call that’s all (at least every other week) to share a positive word or update parents.

Game Room–  Be on the look for GAME ROOM changes to address the feedback from our focus groups.
